It was clear that the windsurfing today was much less important than the
need to commemorate the tragic event of this time last week. As a mark of
respect, everyone on the water including myself carried black streamers on
their sails, and there was a gathering on the beach when everyone came in
off the water for a minutes silence at 3.30pm. Someone said a few words (in
portuguese...unfortunately couldn't understand what he said) and it was a
very reflective moment. Thinking about what happened still shakes me up
quite a lot.
As for the windsurfing...well it started off good today when I went out
just before 3pm but then tailed off towards the end. Wind was strong at the
start - well powered up on my 4.6, sometimes a touch overpowered. But like
yesterday it dropped off towards 4pm (maybe the tide turning affects
it???), and I was underpowered at the end. Big swell out back so put in a
reasonably good jumping performance on the nice light and manouverable wave
board. Gybing was tricky though on the though in the big swell, and a lack
of wind on the inside combined with lots of people meant it was often
difficult there as well. So an OK session, but with the dying wind and
nothing new acheived, not a great one. After last weeks tradegy though, it
has made me realise that every day and every session here should be fully
appreciated, no matter what the conditions or level of enjoyment of it.
